How to Make A Clay Pot Scarecrow

Happy fall, y’all! Today I’m sharing a super cute fall craft idea that you can make out of clay pots. It’s a darling scarecrow with dangly legs that allow him to sit on a shelf or trunk or porch step and he is SO CUTE.

Instructions

Step 1: Glue the pumpkin to the bottom of the 6 inch terracotta pot. Paint the pumpkin a terracotta color.

Step 2: I glued the arms on next, but you may want to add the scarecrow’s clothing first and then glue down the arms. I used a strip of plaid ribbon as his shirt, then added a vest out of green felt. I ended up removing the clay pot arms to put the vest around the whole body, so yeah. I guess I did things out of order. You could also paint a design onto the clay pot if you don’t want to use felt. Denim would also be really cute.

Step 3: Tie a knot at the end of a piece of jute rope, then glue that knot to the top of a small clay pot. These will be the scarecrow’s legs and the pots are his feet. Repeat with a second piece of rope and a second pot. I cut my rope to be about 12 inches long after I had tied the knot. Glue the two rope legs to the inside front of the large clay pot body.

Step 4: Cut rafia pieces and start gluing them to inside edges of the clay pot arms. Don’t worry too much about keeping the pieces even. It’s easier to glue them all in place, then trim them so they look even.

Add bundles of rafia around the scarecrow’s feet. Add more rafia around the top of the pumpkin stem to make the scarecrow’s hair.

Pro Tip: Use a popsicle stick to push the rafia into the hot glue so you don’t burn your fingers!

Step 5: Draw the scarecrow’s face using paint pens. This step can be intimidating, but I have found two things to be really helpful. First, practice drawing the face to scale on a scratch piece of paper. Second, sketch out the design using a pencil first so you can make sure you like the placement and that everything looks straight.

I also think adding white highlights to the eyes really gives it that extra little something.

Step 6: And now it’s time for the finishing touches. I cut some ribbon and burlap patches to add to his clothes, glued a row of buttons down his shirt, lined the bottom of his shirt with a piece of twine, and added a few twine bows to his neck and his feet. And let’s not forget the darling straw hat! It’s really the perfect finishing touch.

And then your cute fall scarecrow craft is complete!

I absolutely love how this project came together. I love that you can take a common item like a clay pot and transform it into something else. The whole creative process is just so fun to me. And I LOVE the way my new scarecrow decoration looks sitting on my porch steps. Gah! Darling!!
