What is a manifesto?

A manifesto is a public statement – a message to the world – of your principles and/or intentions. It is often written as a call to action, in order to rally support for a cause. In this case – it is a for how you want to live your life.

To write a manifesto, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

A manifesto should be clear and concise. It should state your beliefs or intentions plainly, so that everyone can understand where you are coming from.

And your manifesto doesn’t have to be public, it can be private. Make it whatever you want it to be. It should be inspiring. It should motivate others to join your cause and help make your vision a reality.

A manifesto should be realistic.

It should lay out a plan of action that can actually be achieved – whether that is in a physical reality or your mindset.

1. Start with a strong opening statement. This will grab attention and set the tone for the rest of your manifesto.

2. Be clear and concise. State your beliefs or intentions plainly.

3. Be inspiring. Write with passion and conviction.

4. Be realistic. Set achievable goals that will make your manifesto heartfelt and worthy.

Writing a manifesto can be a powerful way to make your voice heard and create change. 

Last week I attended a writing workshop at the Tucson Festival of Books and one of the speakers told us the importance of always having a destination in mind in everything we do.

Every day we are moving forward, but where are we going, what are we looking forward to? It made so much sense to me. Life shouldn’t be about getting through each day, it should be about living with adventure, capturing moments and memories as we make our way to the finish line, whatever that may be.

A manifesto is a sort of a reminder to stay on your very own yellow brick road.

Try this exercise wherever you need it most. It can be for life in general, or for your career, parenting, blogging/web site, health plan, business – whatever you want!

Here are some ways to be creative with your manifesto:

– You can be serious or lighthearted. There are no rules!

– Buy a blank book and make an art journal. Each spread can be a collage that goes with the message.

– Make your own by-the-day calendar using Post-It Notes.

– Use a dry erase marker and write it on the mirror in your bathroom.

– Use puffy paint or letter stamps and write it on toss pillows on your bed, or around a lampshade – or a window shade!

– Grab a black marker and hand write it on a blank canvas (I’m going to do this one!)

– Blog, FB or tweet it, share it with your friends and family.

– Record a video and give it to your loved ones.

– Instead of writing it alone, create your manifesto with your spouse, kids, parents, best friends, etc, that way you can help each other follow it!
